During a play when obstruction occurs, should the umpire continue to give the delayed dead ball signal if the obstructed runner safely passes the base that he/she would have been awarded as a result of the obstruction? Are we required to hold the signal until the play ends, or how long are we supposed to hold it for?

Thanks.

Once the runner gets to the base you would have awarded them, the obstruction is a moot point. I drop my arm just before they get to that base.

I drop my arm when it has been out long enough for coaches & players to see it (if they are paying attention), in addition to verbalizing so the nearby players know it.

It is not necessary (IMO) to keep the arm out as any kind of "protection continuing" indicator, nor does dropping the arm mean "protectioin dropped", again IMO.

ASA allows the umpire to drop the arm once the coaches and/or players have had a chance to see it.

I will not verbalize because players stop playing or make assumptions to what the umpire said, not necessarily paying attention to the actual word spoken.

Thanks, to all.

I leave it out until I stop the protection. I believe that most of the time "they" are watching the play & not noticing what I am doing until some call is required where the play is happening.
