Hello,

My question is : is the safety base strictly mandatory ?
In fact I thought that it is not (only recommended), but the rules do not seem very clear to me about that point.

Thanks,

Welcome to the forum, Gael.
Generally, the safety base is only a recommendation.
Which softball rules do you use (eg, FP,SP,ASA, NFHS, LL, NCAA, other)?

As Mick stated, recommened in most associations, but
not mandatory in most.

ASA it will be mandatory in 2005.

ASA is quite clear on this issue (2.3.H.2)

They have been mandatory for ASA Senior SP and all JO FP for a couple of years. They will be mandatory for all levels and divisions of ASA ball as of Jan 1, 2005.

Thank you for your reply. You're right, my question was not complete. In fact I deal with Fast Pitch rules.
As in France softball is not widespread, I am sorry but I don't know if this precision is sufficient (my references are the ISF rules).
The ISF rules say "The double base is approved", and also that it is mandatory only for world championship.

But in France many rules are misinterpreted. Last week an umpire wanted to play with a virtual base because there was not a safety base, and he said that it was mandatory.
I wanted to know if the umpire was right, or (to my opinion) if safety base was only recommended.

You say that the safety base will be mandatory for all divisions of ASA ball : as I don't know ASA, I wonder if it means that safety base will be mandatory in the ISF rules ?

Thank you

Gael

Try the ISF website, http://www.internationalsoftball.com/

I am lucky, the ISF headquarters is only about 5 miles from my home.
Get to see some good ball there during the events.
On the website, you can get access to the rules and even download them in French. http://www.internationalsoftball.com/rules.html

Have fun

Gael,
ASA and ISF/ESF-rules are almost equal. Also in the Netherlands we must use the safety-base. I wonder how can an umpire call an "off the base" on a virtual base?

Since you are from France, I heva a question: Two (lady)teams are coming to the Netherlands for an tournement next weekend; BAT de Paris and BCF de Paris. How good are those teams? I know I will be working a game with one off these teams. So i'm curious...

love Alex

Hi Alex,

Thank you for your reply.
I am sorry but I am from Toulouse, in the South of France, and I don't know the softball teams from Paris.

Gael
