If a batter is swinging at the ball and is hit on hand is this a dead ball or a hit by pitch and takes her base

Dead ball---strike.

(unless her hands are part of the bat, and not part of her!)

Anytime that a batter is hit by a pitch, regardless of whether she was swinging or not, it is a dead ball.

Now, if a batter is swinging at a pitch and it hits her, or if she is hit by a pitch that is in the strike zone, the correct call is "Dead ball, strike on the batter."

If the batter is hit by a pitch that is out of the strike zone, and in the judgement of the umpire, attempts to avoid being hit by the pitch, then the correct call is "dead ball" and the batter is awarded first base.

If, however, the batter makes no attempt to avoid being hit, in the judgement of the umpire, then the correct call is "dead ball, ball on the batter."

Talking

Skahtboi,

If, however, the batter makes to attempt to avoid being hit, in the judgement of the umpire, then the correct call is "dead ball, ball on the batter."

Say NO, Scott, say No...J/K

New situation. The batter swings, is hit by the pitch, and is third strike. Can batter steal first base?

When a batter is hit by a pitch, what is the first call an umpire makes? Dead ball. Can any advance or any play happen during a dead ball?

If you answer those questions, strike4, then you have the answer.
