Twice tonight in a 2-1 game had plays at the plate by
hometeam. Their catcher is lefthanded. Both situations
same. R1 on 3rd, 1out, batter hits to F1, holds runner,
fires to F3 for the out at 1B. F3 throws a perfect shot
to F2, (remember she is lefthanded) who catches ball and
spins toward backstop side of home. Runner's sliding
feet have crossed plate on both plays. Had she caught
ball and turned to her left, two easy outs, one maybe a
sell out. Coach wants to know why they were safe. He
said ball beat the runner. Yea coach, but tag did not.

Did you get the " But Blue, it's a timing play" statement? Arent coaches great?

I had a play similar about 3 years ago. The ball is hit to Center Field with a runner on 2nd. The CF throws it home and it gets by the catcher. She goes to the fence, spins, throws to the pitcher who is coming, late, to the plate. The pitcher catches the throw, and places the ball right by the plate on the 3rd base side of the plate. Unfortunately, for her, the runner dives in head first, horizontal to the ground about 1 foot off the ground. By the time the pitcher adjusted, the runner had slapped the plate with her hand. One of the prettiest plays I've seen in a long time. The pitcher's tag was somewhere on the shin, after the runner's hand hit the plate. Never did convince the coach of that one.

That why us Lefties arent suppose to play catcher we do everything the hard way

The coaches are fighting for the NEXT close play.. they know youre not going to change the call.. I ump softball and coach football. I do the same thing in football and I know the game of coach vs ump/ref.. The goal is to get you to give em the next close call...

Its fun stuff.. part of the game.. I think understanding what the coach is actually doing is a key to good umping.

Absolutely. I make an immediate decision and wait for any developments, then make the call. Like you say, I don't even consider which team or what the situation is.

I do not believe "knowing" what a coach is doing has anything to do with good umpiring

Something wrong with Mikes and Texblues post or is it my
computer.

On Mikes all I got was his copy/paste of wadeintothem's
and then when Texblue copied/pasted and replied to Mikes
comment, I then saw, or think I saw, what Mike supposedly
replied.

Maybe I am doing too much softball and need a break.

Was I the only one that received it this way?

Did Texblue just steal Mike's post?

Don't know what the problem was. I tried to touch up my initial post and it came back missing my entire post. So I tried to edit that one and it appeared as a regular post.

Just decided to wait a few minutes, delete the extra posts and move on.

You guys dont agree that when a coach is arguing a play.. one of the motives for doing so is to try to get you to give them the next close play?

I'm not saying what you do or dont do.. I'm saying what their (the coaches) motivation is.. they want you to feel that you owe them a "maker upper" for the call you just blew...

Again I'm not saying it affects you calls, or even that you did blow a call, or you consider this or that in your calls, or you cater to a coach in anyway (in fact it may work opposite).. but I know in coaching.. every thing you do, everything you say is (should be) to try to help your team get every advantage you can... on a close play.. even if you know blue is probably right.. you make a comment... to try to get an advantage.

Do you think the coach actually thinks youre going to say:
"golly coach, youre right, your player is safe.. my bad".

They know thats not going to happen.

I'm just trying to understand your answers here...
