We may, at some time or another, have covered this, but I
would like to see some of the answers.

When does your NFHS season start? (what month)

In Texas scrimmages start on 9 Feb. District games on the
16th February. The first week is usually very busy here.
I have games scheduled for five days. Most never play on
Weds. Our chapter has 39 umpires, and there are 36 schools that we cover. Until they start playing each other, looks like some games will have a one man crew.

Thanks,

glen

April - don't know the exact date this year. State tournament in early June.

BigUmpJohn Fri Jan 30, 2004 02:23pm

Late March in PA... perhaps the 26th? Scrimmages can start about a week earlier if I remember right.

Elaine "Lady Blue" Fri Jan 30, 2004 03:00pm

Would you believe August? That's right, only in Georgia, SP and FP.

Steve M Fri Jan 30, 2004 03:15pm

In Pa, the first practice date is March 8, first scrimmage is 3/13 with only 2 scrimmages allowed, first game is 3/26, and the state finals are June 18.

Delaware:

Season starts around March 22. I think they can start practice March 1. State tournament end of May first week in June.

Mississippi

Practice Begins: 1st Week of January
Classic Games : Feb. 20 or 21
First Game: Feb. 23
State Finals: April 29- May 1

Two Classic Games allowed, The game/games will count on the overall record, but not on the tie-breaker.

Nevada -
Practice end of Feb.
Scrimmages - First week in March
Games - Second week in March
State - Around the 3rd week in May.

My question to those states that start in Feb. When does basketball season end? Most states it runs until at least the end of Feb.

Do the basketball players lose out on playing softball?

whiskers_ump Fri Jan 30, 2004 06:00pm

Rick,

It does create some problems for some teams. Because some
of the smaller schools really have problems getting enough
softball players as it is. When they first start, most of
the schools that have players doing basketball, practice
but do not schedule any games till it is necessary. In other
words, they don't play scrimmage games.

WestMichBlue Fri Jan 30, 2004 06:05pm

When does spring appear? Obviously in late March/early April in the Northern tier of states (as noted, Dakota, PA, Del, and here in MI) . Games go thru the end of May, school ends first week in June, but HS spring sports tournaments continue till mid-June.

We have 150+ members; cover 50+ schools, over 2200 games (baseball/softball, Var, JV, and Frosh). At this point we have not covered all the games with 2 man crews and are struggling to work it out. I only have a couple afternoons off between 4/1 and 6/1. Will work some Saturday tournaments, may even get in a couple 12U/14U travel tournaments. (High school players are not elgible, so outside tournament play is limited.)

Not lose out but if they play both it causes for a very busy few weeks and the only big conflicts come in when your Basketball team goes to the playoffs.

Basketball:
Season Ends: Feb. 14th
State Finals: March 1-13

I started to say something crazy like our season runs from July to November to see if it freaked glen out, since we are both governed by TASO/UIL. :D But, actually my season is exactly the same as his.

Elaine...I think, if I am not mistaken, that some parts of Oklahoma have fall ball. At least they used to.

Dukat Fri Jan 30, 2004 11:52pm

We still have a SP season in August as well as FP in the current season.

Here in Nebraska we are like Elaine. We start in August and the State playoffs are the second weekend of October. I think the way our weather is in spring, it would be futile to move softball to the spring. We have soccer and track in the spring and it is always cold and wet. Ok when you play your sport on grass or on a track, but not on a dirt or Agri-lime field. Dave

Whiskers - what part of Texas are you in. I ump softball locally in Little Elm (little league), but would be willing to help out during the shorthanded part of your season.

Skahtboi Mon Feb 02, 2004 12:18pm

Wow mb!

I have worked NFHS over in Little Elm. The high school has a nice softball/baseball complex.

Sounds as though you may be closer to Scott than me. I am
in East Texas. Work Houston, Pasadena, College Station,
Beaumont, Lufkin and La.

To me, that sounds more like the Gulf Coast! ;)

Here in AZ, we will start doing scrimmages after Feb 16th, games will start the last week of February, run through April, state tourney the first week of May.

To the best of my knowledge, there is about a two week overlap in basketball and softball season if the BB team goes deep into the playoffs.

Probably true, but I live in Woodville, a stopping
place on the way to the Lakes, Rayburn and Toledo
Bend. Hell, Mike has more beer in his 'fridge than
there are people here.

Here in Hoosierland we start scrimmages the third full week in march...like the 16th or something. I'm full already...I'm even doubled on some dates...4:30 start one school, 7:30 start 20 miles away. Doing double-doubleheader duty on some dates...3/4 games on Saturdays. I'll work every day except some Sunday's from the first scrimmage day until the end of season. Then tourney starts Memorial day week.
