Going over my USA umpire exam. This one could be a red herring:

29) A team’s lineup card must include all the following, EXCEPT:
a. First and last names.
b. Uniform number.
c. Defensive Position being played.
d. Batting order of starting players.
e. All of the above are required.

Even the rule 4.1.A.1 is a bit mis-worded.

The line-up shall contain the first name and last name...

...substitutes...by their last name, first name...

Can't do starters & subs the same way?

Speaking of mis-worded...what are you asking?

Don't read too much into the question.

Whether it is First Name, Last Name for starters and Last Name, First Name for subs.
