It is a carry into dead ball territory for sure.

Thoughts

No, this is a good catch and pretty sure that applies to all sets of rules.

The fielder caught the ball while both were "in flight" :) and demonstrated possession after she landed.

Assuming this was out #3, the catch & carry would not be in effect. Had it been, each runner would have been awarded one base from TOP

Looks like she jumped from live ball area and caught it. Out on catch and carry into dead ball. Appears it was third out of inning from footage on video

CecilOne Fri May 27, 2016 08:55am

She clearly had possession before touching dead ball area.
1) Why is this a question?
2) Was the BU chasing, only PU seen in video?
3) Did the calling ump get a good look?

There's somebody near the first base line, but it's too blurry when I try to pause it to determine who it might be or what he/she is doing.

But, at the very end of the video, a man in blue steps near the fence and makes sure she is alright as she comes back onto the field. He then looks like he's heading back to a position near 3B before the video ends. As quickly as he got out there, I gotta believe he was "on his horse."

Right, and at 0.27, you can see both BU, the other near 1st.

Differing thought, although the same conclusion.

At 0:05, and repeated at 0:08, her foot displaces the base of the fence prior to taking off; and at least some part of her foot, if not all, is beyond the base of the fence, which in NFHS and NCAA is the dead ball line. Of course, instant replay has no standing, and I'm not convinced that the foot was completely in dead ball territory with these angles.

That said, the approved ruling in NFHS and NCAA is that when one foot is in and one foot is out, the defender reestablishes "in" by lifting the foot that was "out"; she only needs to step back in to reestablish "in" if both feet were out.

There's not enough here to survive any effort to call it "no catch", even if it were subject to MLB-style review.

+1 What Steve said. Great catch, good hustle by the U3. In real time, this is an out.

Although if I am in the MLB-style review booth, assuming TV quality cameras, I also think she (technically) last established position in dead ball territory at 0:10. There is no way to expect an umpire to see that though. This is an out on the field: jumping from live ball to dead ball and making a play is still a legal catch and carry.

I thought it was a good catch, just wanted everyone to weigh in.

This was in the UHSAA 5A State Final game.

Great hustle, both the player and the official.

A temporary fence in a state championship HS game? That's the part I have a hard time believing.

Not sure that is as uncommon as you might think. Here in Georgia, all 6 classes (7 next year) bring their Final 8 to the South Commons Complex in Columbus, GA, the site of the 1996 Olympics. The 8 fields were built for the 8 teams competing in the Olympics (each team had a personal practice field), but are all 300' fences to accommodate slowpitch, too.

Georgia has had temporary fences from the beginning of fastpitch softball as a high school sport (played Finals in another complex in Marietta before South Commons was built).

In many places, needed for large seating fields.

Ours are held on a university's field. So maybe that's why I was surprised.

Watching it again with Bob's stills, that is correct, but as Steve said, she lifted that left foot before the catch.
