Multiple Choice question

This relates to the question about a JV game last week and some issues there.

You arrive at the field and notice the field is improperly marked in the following ways,

1) The pitchers circle is half the diameter it should be.

2) The foul line down the first base line (infield) is a curving mess.

3) There is no 3 foot running lane drawn on the first base side.

4) There are no on deck circles drawn.

The coaches were made aware of this in the pregame.

As an umpire what do you do regarding the incorrect lines after the game?

Do you

a) forget about it.

b) email the AD and let him know that there was an issue.

c) contact the state association regarding the incorrectly marked field.

This was a JV game, but was played on the varsity field for the high school in question.

I would have bigger problems with #1&2....I can live without the 3 ft line and batters circles.

Technically the lines are what given to you, but if Willie the Wino marked the field like you said, I would tell both coaches I am estimating both the pitching circle and lines.

I would be contacting - by email - whomever supervises interscholastic sports in the area. The problem we had for a year or so was lack of a double base at first - we were actually told NOT to play without the double base!

In AZ, we instruct umpires to address the issue in Pre-game, play the game, then file a report with the state association.

Most HS games here are scheduled for a 3:45 or 4:00 pm start, so some umpires are scrambling to get to the site after work.

If there is enough time and if there is grounds crew available, umpires are instructed to have field marked properly. Many schools do not have lights on the softball field (but most have them for baseball...hmmmm), so the games need to start on time so they can be finished before dark. More of an issue at the start of the season then the end, however.

Wipe out the lines the best you can and move on with the game. The lines are aesthetic and have no bearing on the application of the rules.
