Wheelchair

Has anyone ever had a player in a wheelchair? if so what ADA modifications did the league have?

The youth league I assign on a marine base has a young lady who will be playing. she is confined to a wheelchair but wants to play.

She plays on a team with her sister and she and her parents want to keep as much integrity to the game as possible.

We have decided to allow the pitchers to move up and basically soft toss pitches. She will only be allowed to roll to 1st base. then the last out will run for her. She will roll past the base and off to the side for safety. if she is even with the front edge of the base before being forced she is safe.

in the outfield she will either roll herself or have a coach assist her chair.

Any input of what ADA mods you have seen would be appreciated.

There's zero chance I'm going to sit here and type an entire page of rules. From sections A - I.

4-2 Basically states that you must allow Physically challenged player a chance to play by modifying the rules to be ADA compliant.

What I am looking for is if anyone has ever had or seen a player in a wheelchair play and what rules where in place to acomadate the player.

The better answer might be to ask "What rule set?"

Rule 4, Section 2 would be the correct answer for ASA. Other rule sets might be different--or be silent on the issue. Also, one might need to check local listings.

If this isn't a regional or national tournament and it's recreation ball I'd say get with the coaches before the game and layout the rules. Talk with the UIC, league rep or tournament director if it's a tourney and figure it out.

What jerk would argue about what this young lady could or couldn't do anyway? Let her play, feel good about it and make sure she has the time of her life.......That's what it's about.

The question posted by IB is:

"What I am looking for is if anyone has ever had or seen a player in a wheelchair play and what rules where in place to acomadate [sic] the player."

Why are folks expressing opinions about how such and thus should be done? He's seeking experienced, first hand information from people in this forum.

To this point, I haven't answered this post because I don't have that first hand knowledge. I've only been forced to because other people can't understand the request. :(
