What was the red card for?

Violent conduct, abusive gesture, leaving the field without permission, intimidation, game disrepute, misconduct in the technical area, destroying equipment -- take your pick.

In my opinion however this falls under the category of you just can't do that.

If you can get sent off for tripping a pitch invader or trying to throw a dog over a fence by it's neck, you can get sent off for this.

The red card for tackling a pitch invader is simply horrible. No problem with the one in the first video.

That's the consensus on other soccer forums. The referee took the application of violent conduct a little too far.

I had thought I had read somewhere that he was officially supported in sending off the player but I won't claim to know where I read that.

The trip of the pitch invader?

The USSF Advice to Referees (the USSF interpretation of The Laws) says:

12.34 VIOLENT CONDUCT
It is violent conduct when a player (or substitute) is guilty of aggression towards an opponent (when they are not contesting for the ball) or towards any other person (a teammate, the referee, an assistant referee, a spectator, etc.). The ball can be in or out of play. The aggression can occur either on or off the field of play.

You may pick from several of the others...Leaving the field without permission is a caution, not a send off....

So what? Neither is unsporting behavior, but you missed the bigger point.
