I agree that we wouldn't want to "bird dog" the shooter, but sometimes it may be necessary to identify the shooter, in some manner, to your partner. You may not want to be the only person in the gym...

Bird Dog (Everly Brothers) ...
I've never used the "official" bird dog signal (arm outstretched, palm down, point to hip) to identify the shooter (just the player who fouled, as an option). If the shooter is obvious, I do nothing....

Some Threads Can Be Confusing ...
Last year's thread was in regard to bird dogging the player charged with the foul. This thread is in regard to bird dogging the shooter.
