Follow up question

So when does the rule application end?

What if upon being fouled (and the whistle blown), A1 passes to A2 who then dunks the ball. Does the rule still apply and throw in will be at FTE?

FIBA Throw-in spot

I received a question from my sister who coaches in the Philippines. They follow FIBA rules over there.

A1 gets fouled prior to the start of "continuous motion" in the lane for a FG try. The...

Former NBA Refs

And among the former NBA refs, only Joe DeRosa is getting the love. Maybe Olandis and Tommy need a few more years back in D1 to get more assignments?

Also, is Lamont Simpson (not to be confused...

Odd Throw-in

This play happened to me in my last game of the season. I'll try to describe as best as I can.

Team B scored a basket. Team B coach called timeout (they were behind). Team A retains the right to...

Bill Kennedy

Alternate: Ed Malloy

Foster was listed as "Official 1" in the NBA website. Does this mean he's the crew chief? I'm a little surprised if he...

So it's illegal to set a screen OOB outside the endline but it's legal to go OOB to get around a screen established inbounds?

I believe running OOB under the basket to get around defenders also falls under the rule above and is illegal in high school, but yet I very seldom see it get called. I'm among the guilty here since...

Thanks, Victor, for all your insights. Just curious... how do you come to your conclusions? Do you study the officials' stats, watch a lot of regular season games and mostly watch the officials and...

Fascinating discussion here. I like what JRutledge started here. Instead of officiating based on what we think the rule should be, we officiate on how the rule is currently written and lobby for rule...

Thanks for your detailed response. I actually agree with your list above, not because I think they are necessarily the best 12 officials (haven't watched a lot of games this season to make that...

NBA Finals Officials

It looks like Ron Garretson has not gotten Finals assignments for at least the past 4 years. I know he's been there in the early 2000s. Any speculation out there why he's not? (I have been noticing...

IMHO, in addition to intimidation, this action can also be considered disrespect to the official, which merits a T.

"Ref, that was a horrible call" is acceptable in most cases, but, "Ref, you...

Nice. It's good to know that I'm not the only one who notices the Malloy lean. Ed also dribbles the ball an excessive amount before giving it to the free throw shooter.

Former NBA Refs

I noticed that there are two former NBA referees - Joe DeRosa and Sean Corbin - who left the NBA and now work college D1. I believe they did the switch last year and have both been given assignments...

Printing the Officials Manual

Hi all,

I saved a copy of the 2009-11 Basketball Officials Manual from the NFHS website. I noticed that it is password protected and cannot be printed. I understand that this is probably on...

Traveling?

A1 is dribbling, slips but continues his dribble. His knees are now touching the floor. Is it a travel as soon as he stops the dribble? Or would this be similar to the rules when there is a scramble...

Barkley, Smith comments

Not that I consider Charles Barkley and Kenny Smith to be THE voice of reason on anything NBA, but they did raise a very good point (imho) about the whole flagrant vs. non-flagrant issue...

If it...

NCAA Tourney - Marquette v. Missouri

1) When a Mizzou player was fouled in the act of shooting, he was grimacing and was "injured"...

Snaqwells, good point on 3-seconds almost never being called if PC was required (unless someone who has the ball just camps in the lane).

So it seems like even though...

Player Out of Bounds

We all know (hopefully) that a player going out of bounds on his own is a violation. Of course, this does not include trying to keep a ball in play and momentum carrying him/her OOB.

I've seen...
