Weak partner

First of all, why are they weak? Are they a brand new umpire - a newbie who is very teachable and soaks things up like a sponge? Or are they a broken down horse -- a 30 year veteran who hit their...

Foul tip

There is every reason in the world to give a foul tip signal on a caught ball -- especially if you have base runners stealing or just off base when it occurs. A foul tip imposes no tag up...

Angry coach ruling

Actually, it makes all the differerence in the world as to whether the pitch is a strike or a ball:

1) If a strike, then you have a batter-runner who is awarded !B and they must fulfill their...

Walk off ruling

Dead ball -- BR is awarded first base (if pitch is a strike -- called or swinging), runner on third is awarded home. Unless bases not touched (and a proper appeal) then game over.

Where is this in the umpire manual?

Wanted to get your opinion on these mechanics --

14 U -- got called to work some organization on Sunday morning I've never worked for

I'm on the plate and as I'm starting the game I glance down...

National Anthem

I have had this happen to me before -- in fact a couple of times -- on complexes where they had a 2 story house surrounded by 4 softball fields

On many of these complexes the PA system is not set...

2 pitches -- 3 outs

How about ITB -- then out for runner leaving base early (no pitch!) and then 2 first pitch ground outs or fly balls?

Ironic you guys should mention this

Tonight I was on the way to a game in the little town of Social Circle, Georgia. Just before entering the Social Circle city limits there was a old-timey set...

Slap hitting!!

10 U FP --

Can tell it's gonna be bad while walking on the field -- home team has barely graduated from coach pitch, the other team has a handful of travel ball dropouts

Visitors' first 3...

This play

I had this exact play earlier this year in exactly the same situation except it was only the runner from first to second who failed to advance properly. I called the runner out (without waiting for...

Passed runner question

I have a different way of looking at this question of whether or not a runner has passed another

If I understand this correctly, we have a "front" runner who has retreated toward 3rd, which is now...

Conduct

Folks -- I'm not talking about Fed ball, college ball or even well run rec ball -- hell, that's the easiest ball to call because you do have outside controls and sanctions available to restrain...

Conduct

Well, this is gonna be my last word on this -- but my wife is a school teacher and I am a parent w/ 3 kids who have all played ball growing up. I believe I have a pretty good feel for what parents...

Fan ejections

Well, I've got a couple of examples that led to the same bottom line:

14U game -- one team has blown a 7 run lead in the top of the 5th and time is running out -- after the 5th error of the inning...

Dugout question

This brings up an interesting point about underage kids in question.

In a 12U rec ball game late last season, a rather young looking female coach came to the home plate meeting. Coach "Suzy"...

Look back rule

I agree that the ASA rule book could certainly be more explanatory. I know it's a different rule set, but for a much superior, EXPLANATORY version of the Look back rule, look at the rule #12.21...

Metal cleats

I can think of one issue that is a big problem here in the South -- and it is the same problem we face w/ pitching.

Fast pitch in the South is only one generation old -- our game down here is not...

New ASA mechanic

Here another .02 worth --

1. The higher level ball, I absolutely like the NCAA mechanic

2. Low level ball, including 10-16 rec ball -- I won't use it unless I get an inning or two worth of...

I've been thinking about going to the NC one or the one in Plant City, FL -- Where is Cary? Is is closer to Georgia or Virginia?

That would have some bearing on whether I go or not

Let's follow this thru to the absurb

After the #9 batter bats, the FLEX comes up and bats and completes her turn at bat as an illegal offensive sub for #1.

At that point, I've got #1 out of the...

Clarification of above

To clarify my initial scenario -- the #1 hitter is not the DP -- that would be too easy

My main question is -- since we have an offensive sub for the #1 hitter, albeit an illegal one, does the #1...
