Recently the disturbances of parents, coaches and players have made the sport of kid’s hockey in Winnipeg disturbingly violent. Recently the hockey association has made a mandatory requirement for parents to take an online civility test to make events like the one that happened on February 16th non-existent. However, making people take an online course will not change the culture of violence and antagonism of youth hockey in the area which casts a pall on hockey at all levels not just for the pre-teen hockey programs in Winnipeg. Since this is obviously a cultural issue and not non-informed parents, major rule changes are required. One, no spectators allowed in the playing area, they can have a closed circuit television in another room (they should be in two rooms, one for each team).Two, Coaches are prohibited from entering the ice surface, only players, officials, arena staff and proper association certified athletic trainers. Three, instigating a fight or continuing the action of a fight when the officials have indicated it is over results in a season long suspension. If these rules are put into effect it should have an impact in correcting this horrifying situation. (this is only to take effect in Winnipeg for now)
