If I didn't know this was last night, I would've guessed it was from the 70s when this thing was much more common.

Additional actions possible

Before the start of the Bruins-Blackhawks game on NBC this morning, there was a mention that the NHL may/may not pursue additional actions against both teams, particularly against the coaches.

They probably will. They have precedent.

They fined former Sabers coach Ron Rolston in the preseason for the John Scott/Phil Kessel incident for 'player selection and team conduct'.

Look for Hartley to get fined under this decision, and look for Torts to get fined for confronting Hartley outside the Flames dressing room.

Don't think any players will get anything.

Well, those are the only two options.

From how I was hearing the commentary, they were leaving it open ended as if either could happen but were unsure.

Concerning the response I've seen from Canadian Facebook friends, it's about time that the Canucks-Flames rivalry got heated. Someone even joked that it's not "Hockey Night in Canada" until a fight breaks out.

Wasn't that a 4th line versus Kessel's 1st line? In this case Tortorella fired back with his own 4th, citing safety reasons. I can see some temptation to get a free shift with your best players against their worst (assuming they want to play hockey), but the likelihood for injury is very high.

Coaches match 1st lines against 4th all the time, especially after an icing call when the 4th line cannot change. This was the opening faceoff, if VAN wins it with their first line, they can hem the goons in their own zone for minutes....but Torts has been trying to make Vancouver "tougher".

In the BUF/TOR incident, Rolston was the visiting team, and he put out the goon squad. randy Carlyle had the choice to respond and didn't.

Torts doesn't back down from this type of challenge. Peter DeBoer of NJ tried this with him too, and Torts responded the same way...including his insane ranting.

Information obtained via NHL.COM:

Flames coach Bob Hartley fined $25,000

Canucks coach John Tortorella suspended 15 days

Do these punishments seem fair?

Seems fair to me. Interesting that Tortorella was suspended days not games. I am assuming he cannot be with the team at all during these 15 days? Free vacation!

15 days, no contact with team & no pay.

Does the pay get donated or just disappear?

Not sure about coaches, but when a player is suspended, his forfieted pay goes into the NHL's 'Emergency Assistance Fund'

Hartley's $25,000 fine is getting donated to the NHL Foundation.

Tortorella is going to be a couch potato until February 2, with no pay. So his pay just disappears (no mention of where the lost pay is going in the article). One would assume the lost pay would go towards the NHL Emergency Assistance Fund or other organization.
