Look up any European league games on youtube for examples of excessive ice painting....they seem to get along just fine.

What about the painting near the face-off spots?

According to all the rules I've read, the required rink markings must be unobstructed.

In European hockey, the faceoff circles become giant ads...including at the World Championships.
