NHL cancels first two weeks of regular season

APG Fri Oct 05, 2012 09:36pm

It's unfortunate that the NHL is in ANOTHER lockout. Kind of weird seeing as the owners completely demolished the players (or so it seems) in the last lockout, and here we are again less than 10 years later...and right when things were picking up for them too.

But the great thing about big time sports in America...there's a buffet of college and pro sports to watch...someone get back to me when this thing ends.

I know I don't. When millionaires argue with billionaires while me neighbour can't eat this weekend because he has a minimum paying job now, I stop caring.

Besides, the CHL is better. :)

I do some but the AHL marches on. :)

1. I was under the impression that most hockey players are not millionaires.

2. I still don't care.

Minimum salary for an NHL player is a little north of $500,000...which is best out of the major sports in North America.

That is hard to imagine......but true.

Even with our CAPS now idle, the Nats continue to live on. Untl they're done and the Redskins are mathematically eliminated (which could happen any week now), no one in this town will care.

Of course, we still have the Wizards too.

In order as far as minimum salary:

NHL, NBA, MLB...and NFL...with the NBA set to overtake that in the next year.

Not sure how that ended up being negotiated in the last rounds of talks, but I also believe that a max player in the NHL as also the lowest out of the big four. But as I said earlier...not really familiar with what the owners are claiming...and especially after they so resoundingly won the last talks. And from what I remember, the first offer from the owners a couple of months ago was so far out of the realm of reality, that it wasn't taken seriously.

I guess not......

NHL cancels Winter Classic, outdoor Detroit games

JugglingReferee Fri Nov 02, 2012 09:19pm

They cancelled it today to avoid the payment of another $250,000 deposit for the venue. I agree with that decision. Estimates for the injection to the local economy is anywhere from $30 million to $75 million. Michigan could have used that money!

Everywhere could use that kind of money! :p

Yawn. They BARELY kept me as a fan the last time they locked out. I believe they are vastly overestimating the loyalty and size of their core fan base.

As a Canadian, I can tell you, no they aren't. Canadian teams are keeping the league alfoat, and there will be no significant impact on ticket sales north of the border once the lockout ends.

As a N VA resident with a pretty good team locally (CAPS), that sells out every game, there is no discussion, concern, or caring about the hockey strike here.

As long as sports radio and tv can rip the pathetic Redskins and their terrible ownership and management, hockey is not a blip on the radar.

I miss my StL Blues. Winter is better when NHL action supplements Hot Stove and college hoops.

I'll just follow league and team tweets, as well as, Peoria Rivermen action.
