In the NFL if a team attemps a field goal on 2nd or 3rd down and misses can they re-kick?

Not if the kicker actually kicks the ball. Following a fake or muff which do not result in a first down or a score, the down advances. This is why teams will sometimes kick on third down late in a close game -- bad snap, quick incompletion, get another try.
