Eliminating the try would eliminate the most infuriating part of the viewing experience:

Try

Commercial

Kickoff

Commercial

It's even worse live (in person). They come back for a play that takes a few seconds and then take another 3-4 minute break.

What makes you think they wouldn't simply replace removing the actual Try, with just another(or extended) string of commercials? To paraphrase the Duke of Windsor's travel advice, "When they line up for a try, find a bathroom", that will work whether you're at home or in the stadium.

If they did, they'd at least be making $, which is more than the try makes.

All the reason why the try will remain in place. No one that is paying the bills is complaining about the length of NFL games

How do you know that's true? And even if it were true, how do you know there wouldn't be people who would be paying, if the time taken were less?

The XFL shortened their games to fit TV.

During the NFL season, regular season games are the highest rated programming on TV. Sunday Night Football is the highest rated program in primetime. The Super Bowl has set or nearly set records consistently for the past 10 years or so. The NFL is a $9 billion plus/year industry. Games have gotten longer...and the people paying the bills DO. NOT. CARE. Longer games mean more opportunities for commercials.

There is no one the NFL really covets that is holding out due to the length of games. The league has networks and advertisers falling over to give them money to show their game/be a sponsor.

As to the XFL...my counter argument is...it was the XFL.

But I bet they'd like it even better if they sold the same amount of commercial time for less game time.

Then they'd have to come up with more non-NFL programming, for which the ad revenue would be considerably less.

They would want more commercials and more game time up to the point where ratings would be affected.
