New Play posted on Play on the web:

Chop blocks are a point of emphasis in Federation this year and a safety concern at all levels. I think it is also one block that is hard to spot and recognize during the game. Watch the block on the nose guard, and let us know what you think...

I know little about the NF or PW football rules. Slow this video down to a frame by fram playback. Even try to view the clip on a large display for a different look.

If safety is a POE, I might be tempted to flag this. However, the video is a poor quality video.

Edit: So google tells that me that a chop block is much like our delayed knee block up here in ski-ville.

From the video, I see that the C blocks the defender below the waist, then the RG pushes the same defender (in the torso) "over" the C who is still in contact with this defender.

I do not believe this is a chop block, since my understanding is that the first block must be up high and the second block must be low. In the video, the block is low, then high.

Once could argue that that block it is not necessary at that level of play. How old were these children?

Sorry Mike, I am still looking for a better play that looks even remotely like a chop block. The rules for NF or PW are pretty much the same as NCAA. Basically, a chop block is an obviously delayed block at the thigh or bleow against an opponent whos in in contact with a teammate of the blocker...

The purpose of the video is to promote discussion like here... If we make sure officials all understand what a chop block is, there will be at least 3-7 guys out on the field that know what the hell is going on... :)

And BTW, I have been enjoying your posts and insights into the game... If you have any plays that you would like to get posted, please send them to me.

As ugly as it is that is a legal block.

Come on, this isn't even close to being a chop block. A chop block is a DELAYED block where the 2nd block is at the knees or below.

The video here is a simultaneous block with the 2nd block above the waist. Perfectly legal.

Hmmm, not true Dave. The second block must be at the KNEE or lower, not at the thigh.

This block is legal. IMHO, the low block is actually first. At the very worst, it's simultaneous, either of which are legal.

This is not a chop block. To be a chop block, there must be a delay between the first block and the low block.

OK.. maybe it is not even close to a chop block, but it is the best I had for this.. It will not be up very long...

Also difference in definitions from NCAA to NF...

NF: Chop block is a delayed block at the knees...

NCAA: An obviously delayed block at the thigh...

both go into the when engaged by a teammate etc...

It was pretty ugly, kid was out for the rest of the season. The kid was not even protecting himself and rushing in like a bull in a china shop... I discussed the play with the coaches after this to make sure they were aware that this was a legal block and told them to teach the kids to be aware of the low blocks...

I agree that the rule says "At the knee . . ."

But at our rules meeting, every picture where they showed a chop block, the block was always at the thighs and never below the knees. Go figure! Are they borrowing pictures from the NCAA meetings? :D

BktBallRef Tue Sep 02, 2003 09:46am

Could be. I wonder if those blocks start at the thigh but the blocker rolls down the leg, at or below the knee. The rule doesn't specify "intial contact," does it?
