I have in the past disagreed with mike p. But every clinic I've been to in the last 4 years has strongly discouraged the umpire's signal. So we've eliminated it. Does anyone else still have U give a signal? Is that still standard in nfl or is Mike out of the loop?
Now, 95% of the people observing a football game have no idea about the communication that goes on among officials, but this one has an obvious connotation. I give attaboys on the field, but only verbally. I would never high five my umpire for making a crew-saving chop block call on my tackle. I don't think it is a big deal, nor do I think it should be a downgrade, but I would discourage it on our crew. |

No Signals,
The only time i would do anything, is if it is to save the crew. Like a last season, there was a endzone fumble, that the umpire had as a TD but didnt say anything and the play went all the way back to the others TD. |
