Utah / Oregon ( Leon Lett II )
I'm a basketball guy who doesn't know football rules. Last Saturday night, Utah WR caught a pass and was running for an apparent score. He mistakenly dropped the ball on the one yard line thinking he was in the endzone. The Oregon player who was behind him picked up the ball after seeing that the official had not given the TD signal nor blew the whistle.
However the defender came from OTB to pick up the ball. Now note, he didn't run OTB on purpose. His momentum carried him that way after running 70 yards. Can he go OTB and come back inbounds and be first touch.....

Yes he can. There are only a couple of times when stepping out of bounds in NCAA matters and this is not one.
A kicking team player cannot step out on his own and then return. On offense if an eligible receiver steps out on his own and returns, he is ineligible to touch a forward pass until the defense touches it.

Utah believed their runner had scored and some of the special teams players may have come onto the field. I don't have a definitive angle, but it appears that at least two or three of them were on the field. The runback was on the other side of the field so this didn't affect the play, but that doesn't mean it's legal to have 13-14 players on the field.

Actually, Leon Lett got ran down by a Bills player who knocked the ball out of his hands. Not saying he was being smart, but it was a hustle play on the other team. Here, the Utah player went to sleep on his own.
Tough play for TV coverage. I was watching it live. |
