Does anyone have a good pre-game list to cover with your crew? Pre-game for coaches before the game? Pre-game coin toss dialog with the captains?

I know the basics used by my fellow R's in our association but I want to hear from the experts on this board.

Thanks for the input.

Regarding the captains meeting, I have a question.

Referee's, how many choices do you give the team who wins the coin toss?

1. Kick Off
2. Recieve
3. Defer till 2nd half
4. Defend a goal

Should #1 be taken out of our context at the captains meeting. I think this confuses some kids and feel it could be appropriate to just leave it out + I'm sure coaches would appreciate it as well as I had 2 teams last year that wanted to kick off to begin the game, little did the captains know that they would be kicking off again to begin the 2nd half. Thoughts, comments?

I offer choices of: Reveive, Defer, Defend a goal. I do not give them the chance to mess up. We always ask the coach before the when we meet with them. IF the coach confims they want to kick in pre game, I will add that chioce in. To me taking kick out of the chioces just is the "common sence" way to aviod a problem at the beginning of a game + it lets the coach know his captian will not screw uup at least 1 decision.

I give them the options in this order: Defer, Receive, Kick, or Defend a goal. Best, most likely choices first just like when giving options on penalty enforcement. Others may not even give an option to kick just to make them defend a goal if they were going to try to kick. Obviously this isn't per the book but it may keep those captains from getting in trouble for making those foolish choices.

For pregame with the crew, our R uses the Honnigs Pre-game guide. We always talk about the two teams (trick plays, anything unusual), kicking game, overtime, and plays we screwed up during the week. The rest of the meeting varies week to week. We do part of the pregame in the car and part in the locker room.

I do some R at the sub-varsity level and this is how I do the coin toss:

I introduce my self and the other official out at the middle.

I instuct the captains to introduce themselves, loud enough that I can hear them.

I explain about sportmanship and captains (of which I am sure they hear,"blah, blah, football, blah blah.")

I show the coin to the visiting team captain, explain heads and tails and ask him to call it before I flip the coin. I ask the visiting team speaking captain and my fellow official to repeat the choice.

I flip the coin and give the winner the option to "Receive, Defer, Kick, or Defend a goal." In that order.

On a seperate note, what kind of coins do you use for the flip? I have a collection of different coins from around the world that are 50 cent sized or bigger. I also have a penny that is metal and about three inches across, which is fun for sub-varsity and pee wee.
