Kicking play
NFHS rule set.
Kick off after a score. Wind blowing 30-40 MPH. K is kicking into the wind. K1 kicks and the ball sails up and goes 10 yds, clearly crossing the 50. Wind blows the ball back towards kicking team, and K2 catches the ball at the kicking teams 47 yd line. What you got. Actually happened Monday night. |
6.1.6 Situation B.
|
Kick Catching Interference by K.
(Had the ball hit the ground, anywhere, then it would have been a legal recovery by K because the ball had both traveled 10 yards and hit the ground. It would not have mattered that the ball returned in the air to less than 10 yards as long as it went 10 yards initially.) KCI by K in this case, R would have these options: 1. R's ball after a 15 yd penalty is enforced from the end of the kick (47yd line), and 1st and 10 from K's 32 with option to freek kick (for 3 points) 2. Or, having 15 yd penalty enforced from the previous spot and K would re-kick from their 25. 3. Or, declining the penalty and taking the ball at the dead ball spot (47). |
I had KCI, the kicking team wanted the ball. I tried to explain to him that had it hit the ground he would have gotten the ball

Good job. :)

KCI...now takes the title of "most brutal penalty" with the distance (15 yds) and the right not to rekick, and the right of an awarded fair catch....
