c stands for?

The second official in the offensive backfield in FBS wears a C on the back of his uniform jersey.
What does the C stand for?

On a side note does anyone know what conferences are using 8 officials this year? I know the Big 12 is continuing their use of 8 and expanding it into their non-conference schedule, but what others, and to what extent (conference/non-conference etc.)

Also, what conferences are using the electronic communication among the on-field officials this year?

I was flipping back and forth between the Youngstown State-Illinois game and The Ohio State-Navy game, and the officials in the YSU-Illinois game made a point of the fact that the game was be officiated by eight officials and the 8th official was the C(enter Judge).

Since I was watching more of the YSU (my alma mater) game than the OSU game I didn't pay attention as to whether there were seven or eight officials in the OSU-Navy game.

That night at the Univ. of Toledo (my wife's alma mater)-Univ. of New Hampshire game the MAC only assigned seven officials: No Center Judge was used. I guess the MAC is not using eight officials and I would presume Div. I-AA schools will only use seven officials too. I won't see YSU play at home until October.

Right now we are having a discussion in the Basketball Forum about how to use four officials.

I know that the Big 12 and Big 10 are both using 8 officials this season. Not sure if any other conferences are though.

If the Big 10 likes the 8-official setup, I'd imagine it'll filter down to the MAC and Missouri Valley within a couple of years.
