Fake FG or PAT Ruling
What is the ruling on a fake FG or PAT? Does the holder's knee have to be off the ground before he catches the snap?
I cannot find the ruling in the book. Can someone provide me the reference # for this play? |

The requirements for the Holder's knee and what he can or cannot do are in 4-2-2 Exceptions.
Basically, the Holder's knee must be on the ground at the snap (2-14-2a) and he must lift his knee(s) off the ground if he does anything other than place the ball for a kick. Last edited by ump33; Fri Aug 15, 2014 at 10:17am. |

The holder may have a knee on the ground and may even rise to catch the snap and return his knee to the ground (if there is a player in position to kick). However he must in NFHS raise his knee off the ground before he does anything other than hold for a kick. The knee must come off the ground before be runs (obviously) or passes (forward or backward). 4-2-2a exceptions

Hold on there! That's not a requirement for play to continue in the original poster's question. If his knees are off the ground, play continues as normal. Why would it not?

You are correct, however it is a requirement for Scrimmage Kick Formation (2-14-2) and it could affect the "Free Number Exception" (7-2-5b Exceptions)
