4/10 @ 50 .As K1’s punt is airborn beyond the ENZ, R2 remembers he’s been assigned to special teams this week. Just as the ball flies by, R2 enters the playing field at the R-45 . R3 catches the kick at the R-15 and returns the ball to the K-30. After entering the playing field R2...
a.) Realizes his mistake and just stands there
b.) Makes a legal block springing R3 for an extra 20 yards

1.Illegal substitution 1/10 @ R7.5 .
2.Illegal participation 1/10 @ R7.5 .

I think that these both fall under PSK. Here's a question - are the penalties the same if R only had 10 on the field at the snap vs. 11(the entering player makes 12)? Common sense would say yes, but I thought I should ask.

shouldn't situation 1 be R's ball at the 10 isn't illegal substitution a 5 yd penalty, from the 15 to the 10??

Schultj Thu Aug 21, 2003 09:08am

You're right, I slipped on typing that one.

Nonplayer foul..?

The live-ball illegal substitution in this case constitutes a nonplayer foul... Enforcement is from the succeeding spot...

1/10 @ K35

Is it really illegal participation if he makes a block..? (That was my first thought as well, but I need some convincing...) 9-6-3 says it's IP if a substitute participates in the play, but 2-30-15 says a substitute becomes a player when he participates in the play... And if he was #11, then it may be okay...

Thoughts..?

PiggSkin, casebook pg 69 # 8 if a sub enters the field during the dowan dna hinders an opponent, ......it is illegal participation.... on succeeding spots with PSK the basic spot is the end of the kick..therefore the 15 and a 5 yd penalty to the 10

I have an interesting twist.-

What if the ball goes into the endzone (NF) on the kick and we have a touchback? What happens to the play now?

Peace

If it is a touchback, PSK still applies. Enforcement will be from the 20 or the spot of the foul. This could be very tough for a LJ if say the punt is from the K20, caught at the R40. The LJ won't release from the LOS until the kick crosses the ENZ, so it would be tough to get a bean bag down if the player entered at the 50 or R40. I would definately be communicating with the BJ on this one.

I would say we have R ball at the 15 and 10 respectively...because the end of the kick is the endzone the basic spot becomes the 20

Thanks Mr. Rutledge ,I see you're way ahead of me. This was going to be one of the follow-up twists I’d planed on asking . So stick around , more twists to come :p

This could be different in your area.

If I am not mistaken, the HL does not release until the ball crosses the ENZ. The LJ is already moving down field on the snap.

This is no more complicated than anything else, if it is not obvious, you do not call it. You cannot guess here.

Peace
