Chiefs - Bolts: illegal defensive formation???

I'm reading an AP article that says the Chargers lined up in an illegal defensive formation on Ryan Succops missed 41 yd fga with 8 secs left to play in regulation. A successful fga would have likely lifted KC to a win over SD this avoiding OT.

I've never heard of illegal defensive formation. In this case, too many players lined up in one side of the chiefs center.
