Vikings - Eagles punt penalties
Situation: Minnesota is punting to Philly. Philly receives and makes a short return, but there are two penalties on the play. Ref announces a holding penalty against Minnesota and a holding penalty against Philadelphia. Ref then says they will ask Philadelphia which option they would like. Philly chooses to offset the penalties and punt again.
Question: What options do they have to choose from? Don't they just automatically offset? |
Foul on Vikings (Team A) was during the punt.
Foul on Eagles (Team B) was during the return (I think, I didn't have the sound on when it happened). Since Team B gained possession of the ball prior to the foul (with 'clean hands'), they can: a) decline the foul on Team A and retain possession of the ball after the enforcement of the foul on Team B. (assuming Team A doesn't decline the penalty, which they won't). b) Accept the foul on Team A, followed by Team A accepting B's foul, creating an offsetting-fouls situation, which would lead to replaying the down. |
The foul on A was a foul during the kick. The foul on B was a PSK foul.
B gets all the options here. They can decline the A foul and take the ball 10 yards from the end of the kick or play it as offsetting fouls. |
