But...few things can shock me the older I get.

It looks like after he threw it, the QB ended up in the endzone and the R must have thought thats where he released it from. Thats the only explanation I can think of.

Very odd set of circumstances. The R is backpedaling on a 25-yard potential sack. Probably brain farted and didn't think of IG possibility. When L informs him the ball did not reach the PS he realizes he has no idea where the ball was thrown, but he sees the QB lying deep in the end zone. He has no help from anyone since he's back there on his own. He has to guess and unfortunately he guesses wrong.

This is not reviewable, but put yourself in the shoes of the RO. Would you correct it anyway since it is SO obvious? The R has nothing to lose since he's already getting a downgrade.

That's what I would've thought....quite a ways up field, but before all was said and done someone would have steered him in the right direction. One would think anyway.

We all make mistakes, but this one's a doozy.

But who can steer him in the right direction besides the replay official? Nobody else was back there.

Someone on another board offered this solution to the R from the Replay.

Buzz the crew.
Tell the R you are reviewing to make sure there are no more than 11 players (that is reviewable), and oh by the way, the spot of the pass was at the 3.

The R can take it from there.

I've taught younger guys before that if there's a spot you think you may need, bag it. You can always pick up your bean bag without having to say "there was no foul on the play".

Sometimes we seem to soend a lot of time debating the precise use of the bean bag. At times using a bean bag, to send a message to yourself, when in the heat of the moment there's some uncertainty about the importance of a particular spot, can prove helpful.

Post-it-notes don't work all that well on grass, and what may subsequently prove to be an unnecessary dropping of a bean bag, can avoid potential problems. The primary purpose of dropping a bean bag is to mark a potential enforcement spot, but there can be secondary uses that are a lot safer than risking guessing.

Seems to me integrity would prevent that from happening.
