IW enforcement
Fed rules:
A 1/10 at A 20. :05 left in 4th quarter. A is down by 5 points. A player runs to the 50 yard line where he is hit and fumbles. While the ball is loose, an IW is blown. I have A with 2 options: replay or take the ball at the spot where he lost possession, at the 50. And either situation the period will be extended. A fellow R of mine is trying to convince me that the option of taking the ball at the 50 would not include a period extension. |
You're right. 3-3-3c

Case Book 3.3.3 SITUATION C: During the last timed down of the period, A1 gains 10 yards and fumbles. The covering official inadvertently sounds his whistle while the ball is loose. RULING: The period shall be extended for an untimed down and A may put the ball in play where it lost possession or it may choose to replay the down from the previous spot. (3-3-3c)
