Kick Off - Illegal Kick

Kickoff. K34 attempts a rolling onside kick from the K40. The
kick rolls slowly forward to the K45 where K34 kicks the rolling
ball. The ball goes out of bounds at the R30. Enforcement
options?

Just saw this play on another forum. Given the 'K' designation, this must be an NFHS play.

Three things going on here:

1. First touching by K at the K-45.
2. Illegal kick by K34.
3. Kick OOB.

The simplest options to present to R would be:
(a) take the ball at the spot of first touching, K-45, or
(b) enforce the illegal kick, rekick by K from the K-25.

Unless you have some strange game situation, ignore the kick OOB, since it offers no better options than these 2.

OK, for those who want the comprehensive list of options for R, here they are:
  1. Decline both penalties and take the ball at the spot of first touching, R 1/10 at K-45, clock on the snap.
  2. Decline the penalty for kick OOB and accept the penalty for illegal kick. That occurred during a loose ball play, previous spot enforcement, 15 yards and rekick. FK for K at K-25. Due to the accepted penalty for a foul during the down, R's right to take the ball at the spot of first touching lapses.
  3. Decline the penalty for illegal kick and accept the penalty for kick OOB. Two sub-options here:
    1. 5 yard penalty and rekick, FK for K at K-35, or
    2. Spot the ball 25 yards from the FK spot, R 1/10 at R-35, clock on the snap.
In 3.1 and 3.2, due to the accepted penalty for a foul during the down, R's right to take the ball at the spot of first touching lapses.
  4. Decline both fouls and first touching, and take the ball at the OOB spot. R 1/10 @ R-30, clock on the snap.

There is one other option. Take te the ball where it went OOB. That is, decline both fouls and take the ball at the OOB spot.

Right. Decline everything. I'll add it!

Are we sure the kick OOB foul applies here?

Yes...free kick out of bounds untouched by R. That's the definition.

Absolutely. Is there any reason you're not sure it applies?

Well, I was trying to equate this with a similar play:

K pooch kicks to the R-45. Just before R18 can recover the kick, K88 intentionally kicks the ball OOB.

That would still be a FKOOB assuming R had not touched the ball before it went out.

Yep. Illegal kick does not change the status of the loose ball, which is either a pass, fumble, or kick.
