I'd probably penalize the team for unsportsmanlike conduct if I felt the injuries were fake.

No, you wouldn't. Not if you wanted to keep your job at that level.

And how would you go about determining that? Seems like you're just inviting yourself to all kinds of trouble if you're going to try and play doctor on the field.

Injuries are a proverbial third rail that we as officials shouldn't ever question.

And you would find yourself in a lawsuit or not having a job if you took such action and they were actually hurt. Why take the chance?

Peace

Not out job for sure, although I thought it was strange when the R was given the responsibility to remove a player from a game if concussion was suspected in Federation play.
As an aside, I seem to think there are a lot of players pulling up lame with leg cramps. Might not be any more than my last season (2009), and the hot weather recently could be a factor early in the season.

Watching the Cal/NW game, I got the impression players were "hurt" if they were overly tired. Loved watching the Cal coach light into the wing as if they could do anything about it.

What do think of this? Each team gets five timeouts per half. Injuries count as a TO. Once your timeouts are exhausted, every injury costs you 5 yards.

You're going to have issues with players who should be tended to on the field trying to get off to save their teams a timeout. Player safety is our number one priority.

As is the consensus here......

Brian Urlacher: Bears faked injuries to slow down offenses - CBSSports.com

From the article:

"Defensive players faking injuries might be a real problem, but there's not much officials on the field can do about it. There's currently no rule on the books forbidding players from faking injuries -- and that's mainly because it's impossible for an official to know if a player is actually faking an injury."

The only way to address it is to punish players and coaches after the fact if it's proven; sort of like the Saints' bounty scandal.
