kick off

is there a rule that requires a certain amount of players on either side of the ball on the kicking team during the kick off

Yes, in NCAA rules, a minimum of 4. You'd think that in view of their change to the scrimmage formation rules they'd change that to a maximum of 6, in case team K is playing short.

No, not in high school football played under NFHS rules.

Minnesota has an exception that requires four on each side of the ball.

Not in Iowa

For the past 2 seasons Iowa experimented with this rule. That experiment is now over, and the requirement no longer exists.
