Joe Flacco told teammates to tackle Ted Ginn from the sideline during ... free kick

Y! SPORTS

Ruling?

Would they have awarded a touchdown?

The article cites the rule so yes, they would have.

I saw the clip last night on SoundFX. I don't think he was truly serious. More like "What IF we stole a million dollars from the bank or What IF Megan Fox got snowbound at my house?"

Imagine if it would've actually happened... Ginn breaks away for a probable touchdown-scoring return, Flacco comes off the sideline and tackles him. Officials award the 49ers a touchdown and the win.

I think that would probably succeed in melting the internet (to say nothing of what would happen in Vegas).

There's also this tucked away in the NFL rulebook:
Quote:
Rule 17, Section 2:

Section 2 Extraordinarily Unfair Acts

COMMISSIONER AUTHORITY

Article 1 The Commissioner has the sole authority to investigate and take appropriate disciplinary and/or corrective measures if any club action, non-participant interference, or calamity occurs in an NFL game which he deems so extraordinarily unfair or outside the accepted tactics encountered in professional football that such action has a major effect on the result of the game.

There's NCAA precedent for this:

At that time all they could penalize for it was half the distance and a 3-mins. power play. The accounts say it was a sure TD absent the foul, while film of the Lewis play argues for the likelihood of a legitimate tackle by a teammate had the foul not occurred.
