Curious as to your response

We were working a high school "B" level football game and one of the parents (clearly upset at some thing) waiting for us while exiting the field and wanted to know our names. What is your response?

Also, would your response be different when you look at her smart phone and notice that she has a facebook post started?

Funny... I'm always Red Cashion whenever someone who doesn't need to know asks me.

(Edit to add: Don't EVER engage a parent after a game. There is absolutely no good that can come from it... and bad can definitely come from it.)

Zuck.

I would just state in a louder than normal voice "security" and walk past her.

"Your team played great. Have a safe trip home."

Repeat as needed.

Once, after an AAU basketball game, I had a mom ask for our names. We told her to go through the site director.

In this case, I'd tell her to contact the athletic director with any complaints.

If I was feeling snarky, is be Ed Hochuli.

"Sir/Ma'am, that's a question your AD (or whoever is applicable) can answer."

Welpe Mon Oct 08, 2012 08:31pm

I'd go with Bruce Froemming to really mess with her.

BktBallRef Mon Oct 08, 2012 09:22pm

"Ma'am, if there's an issue, your A.D. knows our names."

or

"Have a nice evening."

or

"Lady, do the letters F-O mean anything to you?"

All of them work.

Keep walking. Do NOT respond. You owe no one there an explanation or instructions.

While I wouldn't, if you do want to be a smart *** about it, respond as follows:

Sure, I'll give you my name. As soon as you give me your name, social security number, bank account number, credit card number, debit card numbers with pin, date of birth, address, and about 2 dozen other pieces of info.

You've been hanging out with Padgett too long.

I would simply say "NO" and simply keep walking.

Peace

If that woman was 6 rows deep in the stands and yelled that question to you in the first quarter, would you have responded?

Don't engage 'em.

CT1 Tue Oct 09, 2012 06:14am

"Ed Zachary."

jTheUmp Tue Oct 09, 2012 08:32am

My name is unimportant.

But what I have to say is very important.

Jesus Loves You.

Maybe I've worked in worse areas than you. Just keep walking. You just never know, and if you pause to respond, you've just engaged them, which can easily escalate quickly. Act like you simply didn't hear and keep walking - if they get in your way, as stated above, get security.

DLH17 Tue Oct 09, 2012 09:25am

I'd just act as if she can't be heard and continue walking to the lockerroom. Any response at all to a fan gives them some sort of satisfaction. I only respond to head coaches and game management/on field personnel (if necessary).

Exception - there is usually a cadre of 10-12 yr old boys playing hanging out outside the gate in any given venue that want to give the crew a high five as we walk in or out of the stadium. It's fun to give knuckles and a smile. Goodwill never hurts.

But, in contentious situations with a parent - not so much as a glance.

bkdow Tue Oct 09, 2012 09:52am

it's easier when there is a crowd just to keep walking. It's also easier at a Varsity level to keep walking but JV can be a little different atmosphere here. Sometimes the parents are right on the sidelines with the teams (as it was in this case) and, if it's a low pressure, friendly contest, there are conversations between plays about the score, time left, etc.

One of the crew members said, "it's a secret" and we kept walking. She responded with "well, it won't be when I call tomorrow and report you." It's weird because in my years of officiating, I usually know when someone is upset. We still don't know why that person or one of the coaches was mad at us.

Had the same two teams for the JV game on Saturday and it went off without a hitch :D

Or tell her to contact the A.D. with any compliments.

I always wonder who exactly they plan to report me to and what exactly they think that person is going to do.

Anyone asks me anymore I always say Jeff Rutledge. They want to know if I was the QB from Alabama.
