I would just state in a louder than normal voice "security" and walk past her.

Once, after an AAU basketball game, I had a mom ask for our names. We told her to go through the site director.

In this case, I'd tell her to contact the athletic director with any complaints.

If I was feeling snarky, is be Ed Hochuli.

I'd go with Bruce Froemming to really mess with her.

"Ma'am, if there's an issue, your A.D. knows our names."

or

"Have a nice evening."

or

"Lady, do the letters F-O mean anything to you?"

All of them work.

Keep walking. Do NOT respond. You owe no one there an explanation or instructions.

While I wouldn't, if you do want to be a smart *** about it, respond as follows:

Sure, I'll give you my name. As soon as you give me your name, social security number, bank account number, credit card number, debit card numbers with pin, date of birth, address, and about 2 dozen other pieces of info.

You've been hanging out with Padgett too long.

My name is unimportant.

But what I have to say is very important.

Jesus Loves You.

Maybe I've worked in worse areas than you. Just keep walking. You just never know, and if you pause to respond, you've just engaged them, which can easily escalate quickly. Act like you simply didn't hear and keep walking - if they get in your way, as stated above, get security.

I'd just act as if she can't be heard and continue walking to the lockerroom. Any response at all to a fan gives them some sort of satisfaction. I only respond to head coaches and game management/on field personnel (if necessary).

Exception - there is usually a cadre of 10-12 yr old boys playing hanging out outside the gate in any given venue that want to give the crew a high five as we walk in or out of the stadium. It's fun to give knuckles and a smile. Goodwill never hurts.

But, in contentious situations with a parent - not so much as a glance.

it's easier when there is a crowd just to keep walking. It's also easier at a Varsity level to keep walking but JV can be a little different atmosphere here. Sometimes the parents are right on the sidelines with the teams (as it was in this case) and, if it's a low pressure, friendly contest, there are conversations between plays about the score, time left, etc.

One of the crew members said, "it's a secret" and we kept walking. She responded with "well, it won't be when I call tomorrow and report you." It's weird because in my years of officiating, I usually know when someone is upset. We still don't know why that person or one of the coaches was mad at us.

Had the same two teams for the JV game on Saturday and it went off without a hitch
