Untimed Down?? NFHS
:15 seconds remaining in the third quarter. A is going into a very strong headwind
4th and 16 on B's 26 yard line. A goes for it and attempts a pass. A completes the pass for 6 yard gain. On the play B is called for defensive holding. There is :02 seconds left on the clock. A accepts the penalty for the defensive holding. 4th and 6 now on B's 16 yard line. Clock starts on the ready for play. Clock goes to :00. A now has to run an untimed down?? |
I say no. If the clock would have ran out during the play, they would have to run an untimed down. Since there was time on the clock after the play was over, the quarter would end.

By NCAA rules yes. By NFHS no, they ARE rewarded an untimed down.
In NCAA, time must expire during the down for an untimed down. In NFHS, the rule reads "A period must be extended by an untimed down if during the last timed down of the period,... (3-3-3) |
You're going to have an untimed down.
Take a look at 3.3.3 Situation B, which is basically this exact situation. Note that rule 3-3-3 says that the period MUST be extended by an untimed down. |

The foul occurred "during the last timed down of the period." See 3-3-3. Redding covers this exact scenario in his Example 7-33 on page 87 (2012 NFHS version) as well. Extend the period. |
Wow, that was a quick piling on. :D
