I kicked with a square toed shoe in high school; 1966-1970. George Blanda was the man then.

A buddy of mine held the record in Ohio for many years for the longest field goal. 54 yards using the Spot Bilt kicking shoe.

We worked a scrimmage game last year and one team , Trotwood Madison (end of the season division 2 state champs) had a straight on kicker. I had not seen one in years.
