I saw Gene Steratore on TV yesterday working the Illinois vs. Wisconsin game. I assume that these Big Ten baksetball assignment are set pretty far in advance. I guess he knew he wasn't going to be working a football game that day for some reason.

Maybe.

I would guess he takes whatever assignments they give him and his assigners knows that it's possible he might get an NFL assignment.

I doubt seriously that this is a problem for the assignor. He would probably be honored to have a guy working in the Super Bowl and in the NFL for him now. And unlike other levels it is not hard to fill a D1 game with someone, trust me on that one. Not a problem like HS.

Peace
