coach running down the field to call TO (NCAA)
I have seen many situtations in college games this year where a coach runs out of the coach's box (or whatever it is called) to run to a wing official to call time out. This past weekend I saw a coach run down to approx the 10 yard line to the LJ to call a TO. Do the rules say anything about this and/or what are your personal thoughts on this?

The rules do not explicitly permit it but common sense dicates that it be permitted. If the rules permit him to call time out (they do) and you are someplace where he cannot be heard from the 25 (they often cannot), then why not let them come down to call the timeout? They can't come down to berate the crew or give instructions to the team, just to call the TO

When we meet with the coaches pre-game, I tell them that if they want a time out and we are near the goal line where we can't hear them or see them, please vacate the team box and get our attention.

What you need is that oblong thing the timekeeper throws at the wrestling referee's head -- but since you'll be throwing it farther, it better be weighted, and have a big supply of them because you'll miss a lot.
