Illegal Batting
Fed Rules Please.
4th and 10 for A on their 40 yard line. A is in scrimmage kick formation. The snap is high and over the head of the punter. The punter starts to chase the loose ball when he notices 3 B players chasing it. Being a punter he does the wise thing and runs away from them. As the ball is still rolling at the 13 yard line, B1 reaches down and bats the ball forward into A's end zone where it is recovered by B2. What's next? |
1/10 for A from the B45.

More interesting, perhaps, than what's next is what's NOT next: what's the result of the play?
|
The result of the play is a TD. But because of the foul by B, A has the option to take the result of the play or enforce the foul from the previous spot for a 1st down at the 50.
Since this is a loose ball play, the enforcement spot for B's foul is the previous spot. Obviously, they would want the 1st down. Let me correct: Enforcement to the 45. |
Clock on the snap.

Good Job guys! This IS a loose ball play and the enforcement spot will be the previous spot (40 yard line). 1st and 10 for A from B's 45 yard line.

The wing on B's sideline is going to getting an earful. Likely with a "you guys better be right" thrown in...
