Loss of Down?
Watching my local high school's game tonight. Quarterback throws a fade to his receiver in the end zone. Official calls OPI on the play.
The officials penalized 15 yards AND loss of down. Never seen that before. Is that the correct rule? |
yes
|
We had OPI during a try last night. The other coach wanted to know if he could take the penalty on the kickoff.
|
Is it because the foul occurred in the end zone, or does every OPI penalty carry a loss of down?

As an official, why would you assume the officials were wrong? Wouldn't it make sense that you just didn't know the rule? :) |

My crew had the exact same thing happen on Wednesday night. We were right. Coaches were wrong. |

If you see the same play called two different ways, then that would be a reason to question the situation. |

Stiff..
Officials can and do screw up enforcements, it's just one of those things. So, just for your benefit, here are all NFHS LOD situations that can occur. I'll let you look up all those that are auto-first down (there are five as well). LOD:

Go farther back and it was loss of ball. |
