The Oregon Schools Activities Association (OSAA) has tabled any action on this item until February.

I still need input from the following states:
Alaska, Arizona, Connecticut, DC, Georgia, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Ohio, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, and West Virginia.

I have submitted the info from the states I have with and "the overwellming norm" being 5 officials. It was "Implied" that the states that I failed to list must use 4 officials. I do not feel this is the case but I need your help to prove them wrong.
If your state is listed and your could provide the info I need I would be much obliged to you.

We are holding to a meeting with AD's and Coaches of the greater Portland Oregon area. The coaches and AD's feel that the Back Judge (5th man) is a position that could be eliminated. This is mostly for monetary reasons, however the coaches claim that the 5th guy is not used in most of the country. I said this is not true but I need your written input to support me to take to the meeting.

Could you please provide me with:
1), The State you work in.
2), The number of officials used in the largest (size/division) High School games you work.
3), The pay scale for the largest (size/division) High school games you work.

I got several responses from NY. Most sections using 5 officials and only one area (Long Island) using 4.
Pay ranges from $61.75 to $98.00 (Long Island) for a varsity game.

That's what I expected and also why I didn't respond. There is no state fee nor state mandate on how many officials work a game.
The state is divided into thirteen sections and each section (at least for football has at least a chapter of officials. Each will enter into a contract for the fees and number of officials for there section or sections.

My sectional area uses four officials plus a official assigned as a timer and our game fee is right in the middle of your range. We may be headed to 5 officials next season for one league. Nothing definite at this time.

In Kansas all of the largest schools (3A up thru 6A) use a 5-man crew and pay averages about $60 per man. From 2A thru 8-man schools it varies some use 5-man but most use 4-man crews. Pay is maybe a little less for the smaller schools. Maybe between $50 and $60.

We work in a conference that includes WV and Ohio. All of our games use 5 man. Some parts of WV use 6 man for some games. W. Va. and Ohio use 5 man crews in playoffs. Our conference pays $60.00 regardless of class size.

Correct that to read two of the section VIII and XI use four officials. And it was $94 for Section VIII and $97 for Section XI this season going to $100 next. Our contract runs for three years so don't expect to see the fifth man for another two seasons.

Check out ohsaa.org for contact info in Ohio. I believe they use 5 and have been for a long time.

Are those sections north county ones like Massena and St. Lawrence? I worked a game this year - St. Lawrence vs. East Rochester (ER went up to Massena last year - they were an independant and needed games) and I think St. Lawrence was X or XI. 6 of their kids didn't make the trip because it was the first day of bow season. I thought that was a hoot.

That is correct, that is, until we get to the playoffs. It is then that our assinine state association gets skimpy and refuses to pay for five officials in 3A and down. In my area we work 5 man all year unless we have an 8-man game, and even then we often take 5 and either the school bucks up or we work for less. However, when we get to the playoffs the same crews that have worked 9-10 games with 5, have to go to 4 and work a more important game, makes absolutely no sense. North Carolina

We use 5 man crews statewide for each of the 4 classifications for varsity games. It varies from place to place on JV and Junior high games. Our area, North State, uses 5 man for JV. Varsity pay is $60 flat fee. JV fees are $50. State championships use 7 man crews in all classifications. Playoff fees are $70 per man and state championship fees are $75 per man, all flat fees.

From the looks of what I see on this forum, we here in Oregon are getting short changed. I worked the Baker City/Tillamook playoff game, and it was the first game all season with a 5-man crew. The problem with that is that our association is unfamiliar with mechanics of the 5-man. Our association only works 3A and below schools, we don't have any larger schools in our area. But, the 5-man crew sure makes coverage of down field much better and easier.

We also only got $48.50 each for a 3A playoff game!!! We must be working in the wrong state!
