Two real life stories. I am interested in any and all responses.

Score 32-30 with about two minutes left. QB for the team that is trailing makes a spectacular pass play that goes 80 yards on his side of the field. During the play the wingman runs into a coach on the field as the receiver is tackled at the 8 yard line. Team is penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct and moved back to the 23. The head coach goes bananas and is ejected. Second unsportsmanlike takes team back to the 38. After running a series, team is forced to kick, trying a field goal from the 48. Kick misses, opponent takes over at the 20 with forty seconds left. The team trailing has no timeouts.

Do you stop the game because the team in possession is leading and the other team has no timeouts?

Second story. Score 45-14 in the third quarter. Game is getting out of hand. Assistant coach of the team in the lead has been tossed for inappropriate comments to an opposing player. Star player of team in the lead has thrown a football at an opponent and is flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct. Coaches for both teams are called onto the field and asked to settle the field down but they start yelling and pointing fingers. Then team in the lead has a player break away for a 60-yard touchdown. During the run the coach for that team screams about two of his players being chipped.
As the teams line up for the point after the officials leave the field protesting the demeanor of the coach of the team in the lead.

Was this the correct response? If not, what is?

1- No, I would not end the game. I would let the final play be run. At that point, one more play probably is going to make any difference. Run the play and find security, so you can safely exit the field.

2- I would say that the officials made a mistake.

The first example seems pretty cut and dried. Anything can happen on the snap.

The second one seems as if trouble was brewing way before it got to the boiling point. This may not be kosher, but when a team has a huge lead and is intent on rubbing it in the other team's face for whatever reason, there's always a hold on A on any long scoring play - funny how that works out. If the other team has subs in and just made a great play, so be it, but when the starters are in or sent back in in a blowout for the sole purpose of rubbing salt in the wound, holds by A tend to spring up in my games.

Situation 1 - The correct action to take depends on whether the team down by 2 knows there is 40 seconds remaining. If the official time is maintained on the field ONLY and the trailing team is not aware of the exact time remaining, then under these circumstances I would end the game. If the trailing team is aware that there is 40 seconds remaining, ending the game without taking another snap will only make this situation worst.

Situation 2 - The outcome of this game is apparent and the "winning" team is complaining and out of control. I don't think I would have left the field at this point. I would try to get the winning team under control by using my yellow flag. First, I would have ejected the star player for his actions. You can't really do anything about coaches screaming about an "alleged" penalty IF there intent is to bring to your attention a rule violation. However, it must be done "respectfully". A deroggatory remark directed at an official such as "you blew another one", "cheater" or something to that effect will get you an unsportsmanlike penalty. 2 unsportsmanlike penalties is an automatic ejection. Have security escort the individual from the park. If security is not available, do not continue until the individual leaves or (then) END THE GAME!
