Hold on there. B is flagged for holding ... not A. A can decline the penalty and have 2nd & 5 from their 35 or they (obviously the choice here) can have it 1st & 10 from their 40. 10 yard penalty would be marked off from the previous spot and, by rule, this is a first down (10 yd. penalty on B on 1st & 10) by rule. (Not auto.)

Just FYI, it would be enforced from the EOR under NCAA rules also.
I would have a difficult time with a defensive hold that occurred 5 yards beyond the LOS. Defensive holds are usually on play at the LOS when a defensive lineman holds an offensive lineman who is doing a scrape block and trying to get to the linebacker for that 2nd block. Can you think of a reason for a defensive hold 5 yards beyond the LOS? I think I would be having a discussion with the calling official to see what exactly happened. |
