Penalty Enforcement

Another College question...

Team A has the ball on the 8 yd. line. off-sides on B. Do you mark off the full 5 yards? Or is it Half the distance?

Really?

mbyron Mon Oct 18, 2010 11:56am

Depends on whose 8 yard line. :D

bkdow Mon Oct 18, 2010 11:57am

you should know this one.

MD Longhorn Mon Oct 18, 2010 12:11pm

My son knows this one. He's 12.

Welpe Mon Oct 18, 2010 12:26pm

In college, offsides is punishable by firing squad. Thankfully there is no foul in the book for offsides. :D

Which 8 yard line? I'm assuming you mean Team B's.

Half the distance.

Glad your 12 year old knows. The crew officiating the game did not! I was observing the game as a fan. Watched them mark off the penalty and like anyone else, when you see it called wrong, you automatically assume that is the correct way to enforce it.

Ball on B's 8yd line.

Not me, at least not anymore! :) If you knew this, why'd you ask? And if you're a ref (as per your moniker), why'd you assume that was the correct way to enforce it, rather than assume the crew were idiots. This isn't one of those obscure rules that people have to go look up. This is a basic principle of how to mark off penalties.

(PS - could you really see the difference between the 3 and the 4 from the bleachers?)

I haven't officiated FB for 6 years. Rules change on a yearly basis. I don't keep up with the FB rules so I thought I would take the question to the board.

I wasn't in the stands. On the sideline. There is a major difference between the 3 and the 4 yard lines from the sideline.
