Eye black strips

Is there any prohibition in NF against wearing eye black strips with messages? Or anything that has come out on the subject. I'm sure you can have them removed if there is something that is inappropriate or out of line but what about otherwise appropriate messages.

Thanks

There shouldn't be anything other than the unaltered strip...IMO.

I did have a kid last week that wore those and drew the breast cancer awareness symbol on them and a few kids that also used pink ankle wrap to represent the cause, as well. Nothing wrong with the wrap and nothing written on it, just bright pink....and the team was all black and orange.

The problem with letting too much go with things written on anything is...it may not offend you or I...but who else does it offend....? Maybe nobody, but this is just another example of "pushing the envelope." Can't have prayer in schools anymore....so sooner or later, someone is going to pull the Tebow with a John 3:16 on their eye blacks, and someone will have a tizzy.

I think you make teams leave them unaltered....just asking for trouble if you don't. They take 2 seconds to take on or off...some kid may sneak some into the game with something less than pertinent, and then now you've got a problem you could've fixed before the contest even started.

Canned Heat,

I understand what you are saying but you have no rule support. If the kid or coach objects you can't push it. NCAA has the rule support but no rule support by NF

1) There's plenty of rule support, if I'm wearing the WH. Anything not covered directly in the rules...judged on by the Referee's discretion.

2) Once again....let's use some common sense. If it's something biblical or for a good cause...no one's got too much of an issue with it, I'm sure. If there's ANYTHING not sporting about it, or with colorful language or demeaning to the opponent, you can bet your game check it's not going to be allowed in my game.

Team A Captain comes to the coin toss wearing black eye strips with the words "Miller" on one eye and "Lite" on the other...

Your ruling?

See Case 1.5.3.COMMENT
Examples of illegal equipment... 2) Eye shade that is not solid black or has words, numbers, logos, or other symbols within the eye-black.

So, by NFHS it is illegal to have black strips with messages.

That would be calling something based on a casebook comment, is that allowed????;)

bigjohn Fri Oct 15, 2010 11:09am

Wasn't there a miller and a lite in the bible?

Yes. That's where the RULE 1.5.3 part pertains....

Case book does some wonders on clarifying issues every now and again.

Now...last week we had a kid with an all white towel at homecoming and he used a Sharpie to write his number on it....What Call?

Casebook references are allowed to over rule a misaplication of rules under our protest procedure,so I would use it to enforce a rule. This is for Mo.

The Nebraska School Activities Association just email blasted officials here saying that eye-black which contains the teams name or nickname is permitted, but no other messages or symbols is to be permitted.

bigjohn Fri Oct 15, 2010 11:55am

he said rule and dots, we all know 1.5.3 refers to a case play while 1-5-3 refers to a rule.

I have been questioned for such a foul!!

Similar situation in a game 3 weeks ago. We asked the player to refold towel so that number didn't show.

Great....good to see we have the proof-read police on board. Thanks all.

Almost every brand I've seen of eye black strips has the company's name across it. I'll stop there....

and other than "looking cool", players are wearing the eye black patches, having words put on them, or are using the original eye black and smearing it all down their faces because why again?

Don't go there. This is to handle situations that MUST be handled in one way or another and there's no rule support. It exists for the unanticipated event.

Fed is very restrictive in uniform wear in all sports. They are also very aware of this issue as the NCAA adopted it. Fed doesn't care or has chosen not to address it yet. So please leave it alone.

Don't go looking for stuff. Don't run away from anything, but make sure something is there before you get involved.
