Black pants - poll

I've seen some discussion on this topic, but no definitive answer, so I wanted to see what a poll would produce....

How many people have actually seen and held all 3? I've held the Smitty pants, so I can definitely tell you that I think the Davis pants blow those out of the water. Can't make that same claim about the Honig's pants, since I've never seen those.

I have seen 2 of those up close for sure. Not sure if the other pair I saw was from Smitty. The Honigs were by far the best looking and quality in my mind.

Peace

I have Davis and Honig's. If you go to Davis' web site, you find that he's had them redesigned. Apparently the Fed set the stripe standard at 1 1/4" whereas his were 1". The new model has the approved stripe. I have last years. In his description for the new model, he mentions that they aren't water repellant, which kind of defeats one of the purposes of switching to them. I do like the flag pocket and the adjustable waist.

Honig's have more heft to them, the coating I guess. The waist and pocket design is more like a traditional knicker. Honig's gets a not-so subtle dig in on their competition by mentioning that they "didn't just sew a stripe on their basketball pant".

I have yet to wear either pair beyond trying them on. My Honig's are currently being hemmed and I need to check on them Thursday. We can begin wearing them Oct. 1st, although I'm scheduled to be off. We've finally had some rain this week but the weather should be fine for the weekend. Our booking agent does want us to wear them this Friday however.

I don't know about the Smitty's as I haven't seen them. There was one other brand that were pretty expensive I found searching this summer but they sounded almost weather-proof-I can't recall the company though.

For what I know so far, I guess I'll go Honig's, although they seem to be bit too cozy with our state office for my liking.

I would've bought the Honig's except for one thing. They only come in S, M, L, XL, etc. I'd rather have even numbered sizes with an adjustable waist and not have to guess if I'm a M or L or XL.

About the basketball pants comment: The dig could go the other way, I guess. If I wanted something that was like knickers, I'd buy knickers. And in the wettest weather, it's my shirt that gets soaked and bothers me, not my knickers/pants.

Let me know how warm the Honig's pants are in cool (not cold) weather. I could be convinced to pick up a pair for next season to use in the late, late season when it's cold. What I like about the Davis pants, though, is that when it was 57 degrees last week the pants were perfectly comfortable, not warm.

I've seen the Honig's first hand, but never wore them. I do have both, the GD's and Smitty's.

Last week, we had mid to low 50's and hard blowing winds with mist and light rain off of Lake Michigan, making for a fun night overall. My GD's were still being hemmed, so I went with my Smitty's. 3 of our 5 had the same ones on (Smittys). I came away feeling better about the Smitty's than I originally had. I know the Honig's and GD are thicker, and will be beneficial when it gets uglier out, though the Smitty held up well and actually beaded any moisture rather than soaking in. It remains to be seen how long that holds out after multiple washes.

On a side note....I just bought a few black hand towels this last week and used a hole punch and attached a brass grommet to each. I use a clip (similar to those on a golf towel) and attach this onto my belt or a loop for ball and hand drying purposes during inclement weather. I think this is a better look with the blacks and also hides the dirt (and red dye from the footballs).

That's a great idea... I think I'll steal it for myself.

We worn our black pants for the first time tonight. The NCHSAA mandated that October 15 was the first date we could do so.

All I can say is they're great! That's the most comfortable I've ever been on a football field. Nice and roomy, no elastic cutting of the blood flow to my calves, and very warm. We had a stiff wind blowing all night yet my legs never felt it.

I'm sold!

This was our 6th varsity game in the pants tonight. That means we've worn the pants (6 times) more than the knickers (5 times).

Almost 70 tomorrow. I packed the knickers and short sleeves for our 1:30PM kickoff.

BktBallRef Sat Oct 16, 2010 10:37am

All of our games are at night. I don't think I'll be seeing the knickers anymoe this season.

last year I bought pants from a local supplier who comes to our chapter meeting. The brand name is Holloway. Polyester coated with acrylic. Zipper at the calf and drawstring waiste. The leg inseam were really long and the alteration expensive because I wanted to preserve the zipper. This year I bought Honigs. Belt loop waist and no zipper. Although Honigs site advertised inseam cut to length for $10, they called and said all garments were 36" inseams. My local seamstress hemmed these for $6:) Honigs are far superior. No need for me to shop further.

Wore our Honigs pants last night. Best thing to happen to officiating in my 54 years of calling football.
