Taping up weight end of flag

I've heard you're supposed to tape up the weighted end of your flag with white athletic tape, so the crowd doesn't see the yellow part sticking out of your pants. What's the best way to do that? And why don't the manufacturers just make that ball part white?

I tried taping up the weight on my flag last week right before a game and I thought it looked really sloppy.

Flag

Just bought a couple of black end flags at Honigs - takes care of that problem.

You need to work several layers over the flag to get it smoothed out. Honigs and other companies sell white ball flags but I find them to be too lightweight.

I just use a Honig's long toss flag and leave it alone. Everybody knows we have flags.

Taping a flag to hide it is, well, stupid.

Taping a flag's ball with black electrical tape to give it more weight and a better controlled throw (especially long distance) is a better reason to do it.

There's no reason to tape a flag, ever. If its torn, get another one -- they're cheap. (I do have old flags for weather games, but they are still in one piece.) If you insist on non-yellow showing, there are ones with both white and black ball ends. If you need something heavier, there are heavy weighted flags.

A trip to Honig's website solves all these issues.

Yep. I have both black and white tipped flags depending on the pants I wear.

I would not call it stupid at all. I have had coaches talk about what they think you were going to do by looking at what you reached for. The is the reason I do not think you should stick your flag in your back pocket (Maryland-Northern Illinois comes to mind several years ago). It is much harder for those to see what you are grabbing or if anything. Not to say this solves everything, but I see the purpose by doing this as nothing else we wear is yellow. I also think it looks better than a flag hanging out of your belt all the time. Also I wear two flags on my belt and it looks like you are gunning for people if you have multiple flags clearly seen. And as a BJ is is very common I will have two flags on a given play considering my position and the nature of the position.

Peace

Your opinion. I think it's idiotic. If I reach for a flag, it's going on the ground.

I've taped mine for 2 years now, but only because I like the weighting better. I haven't found a weighted flag with the right balance until I took an old flag and some electrical tape and experimented a bit.

Fair enough. But I have not seen any wait that the flag reasonably adds to the flag at all. I simply did that to hide the yellow on the uniform. And if you look at my football pictures you will see the picture with my black pants and you have no idea I have flags on me. That is why I do that.

Peace

What silly practice. Everyone knows we have flags. It's no secret. There's no need to hide them.

What pictures? I'd like to see some examples of what other people do.

Colored flags

So I got on Honig's this weekend and ordered a white tipped flag and a black tipped flag...so I'll see which one looks better. Thanks for your input guys.

Is the there a reason WHite tape is "stupid", but black electrical tape isn't. WHat is heavier a pound of white athletic tape or a pound of black electrical tape?

HLin NC Mon Sep 13, 2010 10:45am

Black is historically a slimming color so white would be heavier!:D
